Focal points are an integral part of the interior design process, as without them we would not have a center of attention for our guests’ eyes to be drawn to. Why is that important? Wandering eyes in a home can create confusion rather than establish a unified and welcoming environment for a homeowner and their guests.
In the interior design world, there is a specific word for focal point: emphasis. Emphasis is simply the act of creating or enhancing a focal point in interior design (think of the word “emphasizing”). Likewise, emphasis refers to a focal point and supportive furnishings that create the center of attention. This if often illustrated by a view, artwork or built-in structures like a fireplace.

Architectural Details
Architectural details can serve as the focal point in a room and be adorned to catch the attention of you and your guests. Permanent structures, such as built-in wall shelving, a fireplace or a view of outdoor scenery make for perfect centralized backdrops. While it is helpful to decorate around these built-in elements, it is important to not to overdo it, as too much décor can distract the eyes of those entering your space.
Texture & Pattern
Bringing different textures and patterns into your space can energize the room and attract the eye. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and select patterns that match the color scheme of the room while adding a little bit of spice to your design!
Color
Color is a way to establish emphasis in design without committing to a complete renovation. For instance, covering one accent wall with a different hue is a simple technique that makes an impact.
Lighting
Mindfully lighting a room is a powerful way to create emphasis, as it draws the eye upward to enhance the dramatic effect. Adding a chandelier in the entryway, a pendant light over the dining table or a pair of sconces beside the bed are three of many ways to use lighting as a focal point.
Statement Furniture
Furniture in contrasting colors, textures or even silhouettes can give your space the pop of pizzaz it needs to become the center of attention.
Art
Art can also be used to accent a room and create movement. As the eye naturally moves from one piece of art to another, the viewer can get a feel for the theme of the home within a few short moments.
Here are a few tips for hanging art in your space:
- When adding a pop of color with artwork, be sure to coordinate the colors of the piece with those throughout your space.
- If you're hanging art above your sofa, place your hand above the sofa and hang the art right above your top finger. This will ensure the art is displayed at eye level.
- Be sure to find art that will cover two-thirds the size of your sofa or sideboard.
- Maintain balance in your space by placing heavier pieces of art at the bottom to the left of the wall and lighter pieces at the top and to the right.
