Chest Of Drawers, Bedroom Dressers, Storage Galore!
Of course, we associate bedroom dressers with the drawers they’re composed of, but did you know that “chests of drawers” didn’t ...always have drawer storage? Find out more below!
Throughout history, we have thrown around a few names for dressers, including the most casual term “dresser drawers.” In fact, the function of a dresser was originally fulfilled by chests much like the hope chests we now pass from generation to generation. From dressers and chests of drawers to less common names such as highboy, wardrobe, or chiffonier — each varying term tells of its intended function.
Dressers were typically low and wide. They were the perfect height for the addition of a mirror on top. As the name implies, they were constructed to conveniently store clothes in the place where one would get dressed in the morning.
A chest of drawers, on the other hand, was a taller piece of furniture that took up less floor space in the room but did not provide a person with a place to sit or mount a mirror. Chests of drawers were built to maximize storage space.
